Safeguard investigation on structural steel likely to be terminated

The safeguard investigation on structural steel products of U, I, H, L, and T sections of iron or non-alloy steel is likely to be terminated by ITAC. Safeguard duties protect a specific domestic industry from a surge in imports of any product.

The primary reason for the termination is that import volumes have decreased significantly in the last few years. Importantly, although the domestic industry is experiencing material, there was no causal link between the injury and the imports.

For a safeguard duty to be successfully imposed there should be a surge in imports. The import volumes should be sharp, due to unforeseen developments and causing or threatening to cause serious injury to the domestic industry.
